Hydric soils develop certain color and chemical patterns because they have spent long periods flooded and thus under anaerobic conditions. Color comparisons between different soil samples are based on the Euclidean distance d2 between the color coordinates of the soil samples. The matrix color is the first color described in a soil horizon or layer, since it is by definition the most dominant color.
